Rico was a trusted friend, a dedicated patriot, and lastly a military dog.
He and his partner Sergeant Beckley have survived countless missions together during their two tours in Afghanistan. Bonds made in such conditions are unbreakable, and Rico’s and sergeant Beckley’s was no different.
Even when the time to bid farewell to Rico came, Beckley did his best to do justice by his longtime partner and to send him off with all the honors that Rico certainly deserved.
After his second tour, Rico was retired and went on to live with Beckley’s parents at their home in Michigan. After a couple of years with them, Rico was already twelve and a half and his health started to deteriorate.
Beckley and his family made a very tough decision to put Rico out of his misery and have him euthanized. Sergeant and Rico hadn’t seen each other for more than a year before that, so they were quite happy to see each other again.
Unfortunately, their reunion was a short one.
When the time came, Rico departed surrounded by his loving family. The experience was very difficult for sergeant Beckley. Before Rico was put down, Beckley made sure to show Rico just how much he loved him and appreciated him.
The ceremony was held at Beckley’s family home and a lot of neighbors and friends showed up to pay their respects and support the grieving family.
Beckley’s father was a Marine as well. Both him and his son proudly put on their uniforms, delivered their farewell speeches, and escorted Rico to his final destination in a flag-covered coffin.
Rico was a decorated hero, a patriot, and a loyal friend and partner. He will be dearly missed by his family and fellow soldiers.

Please share it with your family and friends and spread Rico’s story. That’s the least we can all do for a hero who dedicated his life to keeping us all safe.
