Javi, a Cockatoo parrot, was so neglected by her former owners that she plucked out all of her feathers and started hurting herself. The stress she was enduring became too much for her.
Javi smelled like “stale cigarette butts and rotted garbage” when she arrived at the Tallgrass Parrot Sanctuary in Kansas last September.
Her original name was Hobby, but “since no living being should be someone’s hobby”, the sanctuary renamed her Javi (pronounced: “Ha vee”)
The poor bird had her first bath ever at the sanctuary and “discovered the joys of fresh banana and apples.” And since getting used to the good stuff is not that difficult, Javi was “adjusting to her new life like a champ”, according to the sanctuary.
After taking care of Javi for a few weeks, the sanctuary shared a very special moment with their followers and Facebook friends. This illustrates why animal rescuers do what they do:
“This little girl is just blooming. Today she said ‘I love you’ and our hearts just melted!”
Everything went well during Javi’s second visit to the veterinarian, and everybody is hoping that she will continue to recover at a steady pace and maybe even grow some of her feathers back. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for her!
Tallgrass Parrot Sanctuary is not only a temporary spot for the birds that they rescue but can also be a permanent home where they can spend the rest of their lives surrounded by love and care.
Show that there is always hope and people willing to help – share Javi’s story with your family and friends!
